Florida Power & Light Company is one of the largest and highest-performing electric utilities in the nation. In 2008, FPL served 4.5 million customer accounts. The printing division of FPL provides printing services for all of FPL and its affiliates, including business cards, standard forms and stationary. The majority of print orders are placed via the company intranet site.
Business Challenge
FPL was already using FileMaker for the job orders database, and IWP to take orders via the web. However, while the database was simple, it was not easy to add new features and functionality. The Instant Web Publishing (IWP) page for placing orders was simple, as well, but could not support the number of potential users, and also didn’t allow for advanced functionality. Additionally, FPL wanted to integrate their database with the company’s IT infrastructure, including password management and HR.
Solution Provided
Extensitech began with a printing solution based on xBase, which included such features as job templates, multiple-element jobs, custom-created services and options, and more.
The database was integrated with the HR database via External Data Sources (ESS). The security was integrated with the company’s Active Directory, so that logins and passwords could be managed as part of the overall IT security strategy.
Extensitech built a new intranet order site using PHP and JavaScript, and incorporating many of the more advanced functions that had been lacking when using IWP.
